The Nubra Valley is located in the northern region of Ladakh. This cold desert is approximately 155kms away from the city. The valley is easily accessible byroad. You can start your journey from Leh, the capital of Ladakh. While on the road you come across the famous Khardung La pass. This is 40kms from Leh. While travelling you can see the beautiful Gompas, green oasis and much more. The journey till the South Pulla is smooth, but after that it becomes very difficult.
The grand valley is Y shaped and has got snow covered mountains of Karakoram Range and massive rocks that surround it. The Shyok River that flows into the Nubra River splits the Karakoram Mountains from the splendid Ladakh. It has the most mesmerizing landscape one could ever witness.
Being located on a high altitude of 3049 meters above sea level, the air in the valley keeps on getting thinner as you move further. This is one of the big reasons why the valley is not very crowed. Summers are the peak time when people from all around the world come to visit the Nubra Valley. In this season you can see the lush fields of barley, wheat and mustard moving with the wind. The pure richness of the land has got this valley the title of the “Food bowl of Ladakh”.
The headquarters of the valley lies in a place called Diskit. The religious foundation of this town is way back from the 14th century which is one of the largest and oldest.Easily accessible through Leh, most of the activities take part in this town. Diskit is populated among people who speak Nubra Skat language. The region is said to have a Tibetan Buddhist culture. The Diskit Gompa was built in 1420 AD. Situated on a hilltop, the Gompa belongs to the Yellow Hat Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. When looking on the right you can spot the 32 meter high white statue of Maitreya Buddha. He was a Mongol warrior who had a mysterious death whiletrying to get hold of the monastery. It took four years to build this statue. It is considered as the main attractions of this town.
Another tourist spot of the valley are the white sand dunes of the Hunder Village. It is a magnificent town which is 8kms from Diskit. The white sand in this village shines when the rays of the sun falls on it making it a flawless view. With distance being so minimal between Diskit and Hunder, people like to try the famous Bactrian camel ride.
Your next stop should be the beautiful Yarab Tso Lake. Situated near the Sumur village, this holy lake is animpeccable destination, known for stealing the hearts of its visitors. Other tourist attractions in the Nubra Valley are the Zimskang Museum, Samstanling Monastery, Tsolding Buddha Park and many more.
